Turbo Over Pressure??

Postby cse235 » Thu Nov 19, 2020 2:36 am

Hi there everyone,

I have installed a turbo boost gauge in my van, because I love information.

I have noticed that the ECU limits the turbo boost pressure to about 20psi.

But long before I did this, sometimes, especially after driving up a long, large incline, it'd run like a dog on heavy acceleration - and then the POWERTRAIN fault light would come on, and go into limp mode. Once I restart the engine, the fault clears - until it happens again.

I was advised by the Ford technician that this light was not supposed to come on in the diesel model (idk if thats true or not - not really relevant here).

Anyhow, now that I have this turbo boost gauge installed, I noticed when this issue occurs, the turbo boost pressure exceeds 20psi, going as high as 30psi, and going spasmodically up and down. This is when you can feel the van running like a dog. But, it doesn't always do this!!!

It takes careful throttling and several gear changes for this gremlin to disappear.

I have a 2006 VM transit van, 2.4L turbo diesel, midroof, LWB, RWD.

I hope that maybe, I can finally get some answers on this.

Thanking you in advance.

Is it a 100, 115 or 140ps..??

EGR valve is the normal culprit to throw a light when accelerating hard or for prolonged periods up a hill. You'll need the codes read to make sure though.

Normal "full load" boost pressure is ~22-23psig on a 140.....any higher and you may have a sticking VNT or electronic actuator on the 140ps....or a duff waste-gate actuator on the 100 & 115ps.
