Ford transit Brake pipe replacement.

Postby 1903stu1903 » Mon Mar 29, 2021 12:31 pm

Hi,
My girlfriend and I are looking at getting a transit to convert into a camper/day van. We have been looking at 8-16 year old SWB transist mainly although are also considering LWB with circa 70,000-120,000 miles on the clock. A common advisory I am seeing is corroded brake pipes, does anyone have a ball park on the cost of replacing these at a garage? Not looking for anything to specific just would it be £500, £1000, £2000 etc? Thanks.

I wouldn’t expect to pay more then £500 and would expect far less .

My transit had a advisory for rear brake pipe lines in 2018 before I bought it.
the mot tester I used wire brushed them and said it was just surface rust and they was fine, I went home finished off wire brushing them and coated in wax oil, last mot no advisory.

So try wire brushing first and if it just surface Rust cover in a wax oil maybe

2 rolls of brake pipe out of Halfords £22, brake pipe ends £20, brake pipe flaring tool £40 , brake fluid £15, rough cost of the parts if your thinking DiY

I think anyone charging 500 would be on an easy day, as andz showed the parts are only 100 and a few hours to fit, my neighbour recently had his merc van done for 340 and I thought that was expensive

Depends on whether bleed nipples open or shear.
Could be in a world of pain if never been touched before.
Should probably factor in new hoses too
