WATER in NEW ENGINE crank case. plz help

Postby truth4x4 » Sat Apr 03, 2021 7:15 am

HI all, just installed a brand spanking new engine in a 2013 rear wheel drive transit t diesel.

Everything was wonderful then smoke. and sure enough small amount of water maybe 200 ml entered the crank case and she started blowing white smoke. now there seems to be no oil in the water but there is water in the crank case mixing with the oil. could it be a factory fault with the oil cooler ? im not keen to start pulling it apart after all that work. keen to see what advice people can offer. cheers and thanks

Unlikely the oil cooler leaks coolant into the oil, normally it's the opposite.

ERG cooler is a possibility too. Is it white smoke or steam.??

It’s Definitly steam.

New engine was about 5k from Ford. Relatively cheap!

Will probably be the EGR cooler then, coolant leaks into exhaust and exits as steam when engine is running. When the engine is stopped, cooling system still has pressure, leaks through EGR cooler into the exhaust manifold.... and may fill up any open exhaust port/valve and into cylinder, past the rings and ends up in the sump. Just thinking out loud.

Was the EGR cooler new with the new engine..?? Or was it from the previous engine.??

Old one! Nup didn’t come with egr cooler.

5 mins and you can see oil mixing with water under the cap

I’ll replace it.

Thanks for the input :)

Why did it need a new engine ? Could you bypass the egr Cooler pipe just to see if it is that before buying a new one ? Like link the entry and exit pipes together with a piece of copper pipe and jubilee clips and run it for a hour ?
