Mk5 Central locking

Postby Mac1984 » Sun Apr 11, 2021 11:35 am

Hi all, only out of interest :

My mk5 has central locking, everything works as it should, it came with a broken remote when I got it, I tried to fix the remote
And it has worked briefly, but the fob then broke again, the plate inside was very damaged.

How straightforward is it to replace the thing with a new one?

I was thinking of somethin like this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/REMOTE-KEYLE ... 0315645521

It said in the discription something about only for cars with key lock, so this is an upgrade for cars that had key, but no remote lock. But does it matter?I mean you would change the unit anyway suppose?

And where is the receiver unit located in the mk5?

Thanks for all your suggestions.

This might be a project in the summer maybe.

I didn't realise that they had RCL on the Mk5, mine only worked with the key in any lock, and the only door without a lock was the SLD :?

It may have been an aftermarket idea of the previous owner, I don't know.

Unfortunately I don't have the fob anymore, but it was nothing ford-like, just a little round plastic thingy with two buttons.

Was it an alarm fob, like this?
You could use the Cobra alarm fob to "remotify" the central locking, my son did it on his Escort which only had key central locking. It could probably be done with other makes of alarm too :)

Good Thinking.

The Fob looked very similar to what you are showing there.

Maybe the best way would be to find the receiver of the old fob and see what it says on it?

PS: good name for the alarm too, Cobra :-)

Remote central locking was not available on mk5 - so what you have is definately and aftermarket set up.

Thanks Minor Matt.. So this is confirmed now. Which also means that the receiver unit could be installed anywhere.
.

Any thoughts regarding what I have posted on top? Seemed much better value then the cobra thingy.. I don't mind really what it is..

So if I find the old unit and replace it, that should work? I don't care about flashing indicators or keyless entry for example..if that function is there as well and works, fine, but I don't really need anything apart from lock/unlock function.

This is not an urgent thing either, so I keep looking for whatever seems reasonable

Thanks for all your thoughts..

There is a good chance that the reciever is inside one of the doors - it won't be the side loading door because that doesn't have the electrics to "control". My best would it being inside the drivers door...

As for the aftermarket ones, I guess they probably work just fine - but I have no direct experience

Thank you for your thoughts.

I had the driver door apart some while ago to replace the window motor..

Definitely not in there, but I give the other door a try at some stage. .

Thanks a lot, I'm sure it can't be far..

Spot on Minor Matt

I found the Unit behind the passenger side footwell lining.

Well done.

Thanks for your help
