Mk5 reversing light

Postby npjrogers » Fri Apr 23, 2021 9:29 am

My ‘96 mk5 smiley banana motorhome is away getting a MAJOR bodywork rebuild. (4k’s worth) When we get her back she is getting a new radio that incorporates a reversing camera. Where is the best place to pick up a control signal for the camera bearing in mind it will be wired to the back of the radio? The camera video signal has 18ft of lead hopefully enough for a swb.. I will post some before and after pics when the job is finished.

The wiring to the rear lights go up the windscreen pillars... I would pick up the feed for the head unit there, and the camera at the rear lights

on the headunit in my mk7 the signal wire that switches it to reversing camera is built in to the video cable, the 12v from the reversing light that powers on the camera then becomes the signal to the headunit too. your cable might be the same, and it saves hunting for a wire in the loom.

that's a nice bit of kit for the dosh. I've found a remote control rather handy in a motorhome (my seating is at the rear).

Should be easy to fit. Don't cut your cables if possible, buy an adaptor cable to go between the stereo and your loom and modify that instead. Makes it easy to refit your original stereo.

Thanks everyone. The reversing camera is now installed. I began by locating the correct wire on the offside rear light cluster. Use the feed wire to the reversing light and check that it is showing voltage when the reversing light is on. On my van it is the Violet and orange wire.. not as shown in the Haynes manual… I decided not to drill any holes in the bodywork. I mounted the camera inside the top of the rear door by sliding it into the mounting rubber of the rear door window. It faces down nicely. I ran the cable behind the sink and cooker up at the level of the join between van roof and grp hightop. Worked a treat. Under the driver side ceiling trim and down through the right hand A post. From then on it was easy. Connect the red signal cable to the pink trigger wire on the back of the head unit. All working well.. thanks all.
