Upgrading gvwr? Frame comparison 3.5 vs 4.7?

Postby Jetto » Sat May 29, 2021 11:04 pm

2020 transit l4h3 2.0 Eu. The 3500kg cap is killing me. What can a conversion company get the gvwr up to without any modifications? I read somewhere that it can get to 3.8 no mods but I'm not positive on that and i can't find that information again.

Side quest;
Are there any structural differences to the frame of a 4.7 aside from suspension, leafs and extra tires? I'm trying to figure out if the gvwr restriction is because of suspension or frame. Suspension can obviously be upgraded.

No idea but my Mk7 LWB medium roof has the "heavy duty pack" from factory which basically means the 4.7 suspension, which basically translates to just heavier springs

Sorry, not sure of the rules about in increasing weight class though

I could probably get by with 3.8.
I pulled up my COC and it says:
Technically permissible total weight when loaded: 3500kg
Technically permissible maximum weight per axle 1/2/3: 1850/2250kg
Technically permissible total weight of the vehicle combination: 6000kg

Does this mean. 4100 is the actual maximum for the axle itself? So the limiting factor is the licensing and suspension. I'm taking a swing, could be wrong as hell here, this is gibberish to me

6000kg if I'm not mistaken is the train weight, IE van and trailer. Not total van weight though I reckon most of the scrap collection vehicles are constantly that+ on the way to the scales and a lot less on the way out

I think 4.1 is the highest for a single tyred transit.
Mine was 4.1 down rated to 3.5t

The 4.6t are all double wheeled.

I don't know if the 4.1 is heavier sprung?

The 3.5 might be fwd only whereas mine is rwd.

Mine looks like it is up on stilts esp as I removed 300kg of seats and replaced with less than 100kg of furniture.

Finally got somewhere, we can upgrade to 4.1 just need to upgrade the leaf and dampers. Total is about 2500€ and then Ford will get us a new vin plate. 4.1 should be plenty for our build!

Just a thought does your driving license cover you for over 3500 kgs I know that when I get to 70 I have to have medical every year to keep my license or downgrade mine and renew every 3 years.
