constructing an emergency van

Postby gill22 » Thu Jun 10, 2021 6:17 am

In my location, I'm not sure I'll be able to get an AWD Ford Transit or a 4wd pre-built Transit van. So, if you had to choose between FWD and RWD for tough Canadian winters and ice roads, which would you choose? For the first winter, the build will most likely be small (aside from the bed, there won't be much rear weight), and I'll need to commute several hundred kilometres every couple of weeks.

Which one would you choose?

The "emergency" is that I'll most likely need to find a base van in the next few days and then build it out as I sleep in it.

FWD tends to be better in slippy conditions - but if you have weight in the back RWD should be good.

FWD has the advantage of a lower cargo floor (more headroom)

But in reality, what will make the biggest difference is getting the right tyres on it for winter conditions
