Waterless Coolant, Scam?.

Postby andypdq » Thu Jun 17, 2021 8:11 pm

Not been on here for an awfully long time, so hello again.

Does anyone have any experience of using waterless coolant? Waterless coolant is propylene glycol as far as I know. It has a much higher boiling point than water, but it's specific heat capacity is far lower than water, which means that it is less efficient at transporting waste heat from your engine to your radiator, which means that your engine will potentially run considerably hotter than it's design temp when running waterless coolant, but it won't boil. I'm somewhat nervous about using waterless coolant.

It’s a bloody waste of time in most vehicles imo, it’s benefit is lack of pressure buildup, but I don’t see that as a benefit in a Transit. Some classic car owners swear by it, but I don’t know anyone who’s used it long term, they usually go back to water and antifreeze. The only worthwhile cooling additive I’ve used is water wetter which will reduce temperatures slightly.

It's heat capacity is less than conventional coolant, your water pump moves the same volume of coolant per minute so it's able to transport less heat from your engine to the radiator than conventional coolants, so your cooling capacity is actually reduced, it won't boil but your engine will still overheat, that's great!

You obviously realise that it’s not for Transits as you’ve posted the same thing twice.

I've had "ELC" (CAT Extended life coolant) in my vans for a few years now, can't comment as such but might try a change as had a couple of times it's got hotter under heavy load hard acceleration.

Maybe alerting people to the facts could be a beneficial thing ?
