The SU carb was a very sophisticated instrument compared to the fixed jet carbs common at the time, great for the daily driver. Not great for max possible performance, but no one's looking for that in a daily driver. The Zenith Stromberg was similar. I remember from my college days, fitting twin SUs from a Marina to a Ford 1600 Kent engine, which has the standard Ford fixed jet carb, fabricated manifold, fatter needles to reduce the fuel slightly, because the cabs were from an 1800, big increase in economy, increase in performance too. SU carbs underrated.

No argument here... at the moment all my running vehicles with petrol engines have one (or 2) fitted

We're both Skinner Union bitches! The reason why BL products of the day always were more economical than their fixed jet competitors.

Offset depends on the rod/stroke ratio in essence, longer rods invariably give more/better power in the same motor than shorter ones - which is why modern stuff has long rods, short crown heights, and oil cooled pistons to keep the piston pin bearing happy.

I very much doubt whether BL would have invested money in tooling up to offset the crank, small ends, maybe

Why would they not invest in tooling when the 1275 was a completely new block and would have been tooled pretty much from scratch anyway?

Anyway Andy... how are you getting on with your build? Any results yet?

The A+ was engineered and first produced in 1980 I believe, the 1275 was first produced in 1964, was the crank offset tor those 16 years? Was it offset after 1980. I'll happily eat my words if it was. Evidence please.

No A-series or A+ engines ever had the crank offset. Trust me on this.

When they swapped from A to A+, not much new tooling was needed, as the only difference is the distributor mount. Apart from that it dimensionally exactly the same. No new tooling, just a new casting.

Where did I say it would be new tooling for the A+ block? P.S. you missed the tooling for the Marina/Ital A+ oil filter change too

You'll be telling us how good the meastro was again soon!

Although this thread is around 15mins of my life that'll never get back. The whole point seems imo to be......

So it's possible, perhaps even if only gaining ¼hp, but completely pointless gains per £ on a transit. even on an already stripped and bare engine, it's not worth the price of the gaskets given the potential wear and noise?

After that it's decended into the usual fight over technicalities, evidence, spelling and who can piss up the wall highest?

I’ve got a couple of A series in build (one offset  ) seems like no one else is actually building and engines, despite their posturing. They can talk the talk…

I am getting bits up together for a 1275 A series engine build... as well as a type 9
