diesel compression test with only 1 glow spark

Postby tomvdrunen » Wed Jul 28, 2021 9:36 am

i have bought a ford mk1 with a diesel engine (not original) unfortunattely this diesel is trowing out the engine oil while running (after a while) the oil comes out of the oil dipstick so i supose over pressure in the engine, maybe the piston rings?
i want to do a compression test to have more information from the engine but the engine have only 1 central glow plug, can i do the thest in the injectors?
how can i disconnect to fuel pump? does i need to mark this pump when i disconnect this (is it difficult to time the fuel pump?)
where can i find the maintanance / adjustment information from this engines?

From memory the York engine has timing marks and is not pegged up like the 2.5 di on the injection pump drive it may have a pointer that is adjustable this is set when the pump is built up from new or reconditioned so don’t move it ,on the drive hub it is marked up with degrees before TDC I’m maybe thinking of the inline pump and they had a plate on the side that said 12 degrees before TDC setting for the timing but we had a bulletin from Ford due to bad starting from cold it should be set at 13 degrees before TDC .the crankshaft definitely has a timing mark but I can’t remember what the camshaft had.
As for compression when they started blowing out oil never did a compression test work would just put a new engine in and get the van back on the road as soon as possible we used to have a spare engine and have it rebored till one had a porous bore and kept filling up the sump with water and had to striped down and the cylinder sleeved.

If you’re going to fit a new engine go for a di not sure if the Banana di will clear the bonnet someone will have done it .on a mk2 I changed a York for a di and was a straight forward job can’t remember if I had to modify anything but if I did it was not much.and looking at your plate I think only reconditioned engines had it so it maybe a exchange engine .

The di is the direct injection engine that replaced the. indirect injection York engine and the Banana engine is a di that has a inlet manifold that looks like a bunch of bananas .I can’t remember if the last of the mk1s had the di fitted or it was first fitted in a mk 2 the banana engine was fitted in the mk5 transit.I have fitted a mk 3 di engine into a mk2 and is a easy to do .
