Tachograph failure. T430 16 seta minibus.

I bought a 1 seat transit minibus (61 plate) last October with a view to converting to a camper. The vehicle came with a VDO 1381 displaying mileage in KM which all corresponds as it should to MOT history for bus. The mileage does not display on the display behind steering wheel. The tacho has now died. It wasn't the backup battery. It shows 3.2 v. It wasn't the vehicle being drained of battery. Just one morning, started up and it was dead. No illumination. No data. The plug live feed has 12v.

I sent the tacho off to a tacho specialist in Cheshire last week and he tested it. Said the battery on it was fine but it looks like it has suffered an internal failure of sorts and it is goosed.

All I want is for the odometer mileage to display on the factory display. How can this be done? the tacho is now out of it and no longer plugged in and the bus runs fine. It shows trip counter turning no problem. Speedometer works fine. I just need the overall mileage back as I understand this is an MOT failure and it is due in October.

Any advice would be very welcomed.


I don't know why this is proving to be so bloody difficult. It's not like it is a reinvention of the wheel.

I had my mk8 done at Ford dealership and the speed limiter removed but they would only do it after it was changed to motor caravan at the same time .someone on here will know someone who can do it .

It needs someone with IDS (maybe forscan - which is a free download + the cable ~£16 from tunnelrat electronics) to reprogram the BCU to say it hasn't got a tachograph

I called today to Evans Halshaw Ford Commercial dealer in Glasgow. Explained what I was trying to do. They are saying for an initial diagnostic to see if they could do it would cost me £126 plus VAT for the hour. Holy sh** .

And this is why many of us have our own Forscan or lDS setup...less than 20quid will have you setup with Forscan and you can then do all the diagnosis you like in your own time...at your own house.

Just had my tacho removed and a remap done by a chap known on here, so I now have much improved performance and a spare fully working tacho

When I had mine removed I changed the internal battery before I sold it as the make of the one I had if the battery went flat the taco was useless and ruined.
