MK7 Tyres Squealing, I've no idea why!

Postby paulrichardson » Tue Aug 24, 2021 4:41 pm

My Mk7 has been off the road for over a year due to health problems.

I'm lots better now, but the van isn't very happy, it cost me a few bob to get it through the MOT mainly brake discs and seized bits due to the lack of use.

Now I'm finding the the front tyres are squealing at the slightest provocation, I wondered if that could be due to lack of use :?:

They passed the MOT but I'm guessing they only check the tread depth.

Has anyone got any ideas?

Check tyre Air pressure.
What was required for MOT? Anything that may of affected the steering/tracking, like ball joints, bottom arms, etc.

Because you don't do many miles, it could be that the tyres are now past their best with regards to age. It may be worth checking the date stamp on the tyres, because the rubber hardens with age, and grip is reduced

There's no obvious wear showing on the Tyres, but getting the tracking checked might be a good idea. The Squealing is mainly when cornering.

I checked the Tyre pressures and they are OK.

I had to have new front brake discs for the MOT, would that effect tracking ?

What format is the date stamp?

I have already tried to find a date, but couldn't find anything that I could decipher as a date :?

Four numerals on the side wall, the first two are the week of manufacture, the second two are the year.

Many thanks, found it, mine are 5010.

I guess that means I really need to be looking for new ones. :(

The existing ones are 215 75 R16 C 113/111Q

So I've got a C and a Q that I'm not sure about

Yes, you're on the far end of useful life, which is a shame if they're not worn out, but it's often a problem with low mileage vehicles such as campers. I've binned many a tyre that has aged before it was worn out :(

It's a shame that you're not closer, as I have a set of 16s that you could have tried before you bought new ones :D

Many thanks for your kind offer.

The Fronts are showing quite a bit of wear, so I think for safety's sake I will start looking at prices for new ones all around.

The C is for commercial.

Think the Q is speed rating.

113/111 is load rating.
