Thud when releasing accelerator

Postby robjmccarthy » Sun Aug 29, 2021 8:54 pm

Hi All,

I have a 2014 Ford Transit Custom (2.2l).

When driving, most of the time if I accelerate in gear fast and then lift the accelerator fast, I hear a loud dull thud.

Mainly notice when driving in the lower gears.

Any thoughts would be grand before I get it into a garage.

I did a little reading through historical posts and wondered if this could be due to a worn/broken gearbox mount??

If you need any more info from me, please do let me know and I'll respond.

Many thanks
Rob (first van owned)

I would think your right and that it sounds like a mount of some kind to me, either engine or gearbox.
If you leave the handbrake on and let the clutch up and down to the biting point do you still hear the thud?
Maybe try the same thing and have someone look under the bonnet for unusual engine movement or transmission movement

Thanks Derv,

I'll give it a go tomorrow - appreciate the direction. I'll update after tomorrow.

EDIT: meant to ask, if it still happens with the handbrake as you describe, would this point to a mount issue ?

Hi Derv,

With the handbrake on, and either releasing the clutch fast or the accelerator, it doesn't thud.

Does this help prove what you mentioned?

Thanks
Rob

To close this thread off, in case it helps anyone in the future, the 'thud' was due to an 'Engine Stabiliser Mounting' which (as the garage said) had "gone".

Just picked it up, after being replaced, and the thud has gone!

For anyone who ends up here with something similar, with genuine parts (£107) and labour (£60p/h) - both excluding VAT, it ended up costing just over £200 in total (including VAT etc). Hopefully this is useful to others in the future.

It's not fuel sloshing round in the tank is it?

At low speeds I notice a regular dull thud on mine if the tank is over half full when accelerating and braking round town.

Jut a thought....

*EDIT - Whoops - OP had already found the issue!! WIll teach me for skim reading....
