Turn ignition, dash lights on, then nothing.

Postby firewalker » Wed Sep 22, 2021 7:42 pm

I have had this intermittent problem for years but it seems to be getting worse.
When turning the ignition key there is no response from the starter for several attempts, usually takes a few goes then suddenly fires up no problem.
The dash lights come on, but there is no 'click' or anything from the starter (though it did once turn without firing - tried again and it started no problem).
It used to be once in a while and was usually ok on the second attempt, now it's every time and taking maybe five or six attempts if not more sometimes.

    Changed ignition switch.
Battery fully charged and terminal connections checked.
    Starter motor is fairly new.

Any suggestions what else to try?

Starter relay not well maybe..?? Relay #1 in the engine bay fuse box I believe.

Had similar problem few months back on auld Bettsie mk7 and the relay was fooked, replaced with good secondhand and it lasted about a week, the culprit was starter short and fooked the relay, fitted new starter and another secondhand relay and and all good now , had an oil leak that that dripped onto the starter and after a while it destroyed the the fairly new brushed and caused the short, so don't rule out your fairly new starter

Do you get an engine malfunction or any warning lights on at all?

Do you know if that's the black one or grey y' Lordship?
Looking at the box from the front there are three relay sockets across the top left to right. The middle socket is empty and the other two sockets have identical grey relays (F80B-14B192-AA, 4 PIN ).
There is a black one that sits beneath the first grey relay on the left, similar dimensions to the grey ones (5-Pin Black Relay F0AB-14B192-AA G1UHQ 12V 40A/20A). My gut feeling says it's that one?

Okay changed relays and still having the problem.
Dash lights on but when the key gets turned to start the engine nothing, lights all stay on.
Several attempts needed before it miraculously starts no problem, but it seems to be needing more of those.

sounds like starter, maybe a bad connection on the starter or battery

I had this issue with my Connect a few weeks back and it turned out to be the starter. It was a bit random, occasionally it would start “normally” on other occasions I’d just get the solenoid click, and on other occasions nothing. Changed the starter and now all is well.

Can I ask the obvious question:

If it is a MK6, when you turn the key do you get a solid red light in the middle of the rev counter, or does it flash?

If it is flashing, it means it hasn't picked up the chip in the key and is immobilised and it won't even try to turn the starter motor. If so, you have to turn it off, turn back on and wait for the light to go solid red before you try ad start. Mine is very intermittent with this.

Apologies if you already knew this, just thinking of the simple stuff!
