Dual battery system w/Euro6 and S&S

Postby Blizz » Mon Oct 25, 2021 6:52 am

Hi,

I'm currently waiting for my new Transit to arrive so I'm trying to source info and items to install once it gets here.

I'm a bit confused about the dual battery system... I've read quite a lot about the way the smart alternators work on those Euro6 so I understand I need a booster (Or DC-DC Charger) but I'm quite confused about the Start&Stop system.

I read about a connector on the mk7s that has current when ignition is on, but nothing about the newer mk8 (Mine will be a 2.0 Ecoblue Euro 6.2 with S&S).

Supposing I find a signal for triggering my DC-DC Charger, if that signal is like the mk7 one it will not be the ideal, as it only says ignition is on but not the engine is on. I mean, I don't want the mail battery giving amps to the secondary when you're stopped in a red light with the engine stopped, for example...

I've seen there are some D+ Simulators but could not find any info about those.

How would you install a dual battery system on a S&S mk8?

Thanks in advance,

David

there are smart b2b charges about that don’t need a ignition feed and are just connected to the van battery’s I use a Sterling one on my 2015 2.2 euro 6 bus for them you can get a lead from Ford that plugs into a connector under the drivers seat it may be worth having a word with Ford to see if this is available for your later van if you get a unit that needs a ignition feed.

I'd prefer to use an auto one like the Sterling you named.

I know I can get that OEM adaptor for that plug but it's quite expensive for only using one wire, I can crimp a connector or something.

BTW, does that connector have a signal when the engine is ON (Not ignition but engine running?).

Is this the one you've?

Thanks for your help!

No mine is the 75 amp one and no solar function.when I thought I had a problem with mine I did fit a live feed to it from the connector in the seat box and did use a crimp on terminal and I think that when I tested it out it was on when the ignition was on so if you use stop start it will probably still be energised on my van I’ve had the stop/ start turned off so mine will only change when I have ignition on and running the engine.

Mk7 DOES have an "engine running" signal wire so I'm sure the Mk8 will, especially with it having stop/start. Try to get hold of a BEMM (Body & Equipment Mounting Manual) for it, I'm sure it will be in there.
Drink moderately, eat healthily, exercise regularly, die anyway.

Thanks Andy, I'll try to find the BEMM.

Cheers,
