Transit 2010 diesel 2.4 mk 7 hard to start in morning

Postby WulWendy » Wed Nov 10, 2021 12:17 pm

Hi having problems starting van in the morning. When it eventually starts-yesterday took 56 turns off the key-theres clouds of black smoke. It will run fine the rest of the day. Replaced battery, replaced diesel filter housing unit and filter and new hoses. Still had trouble so bought a tin of easy start which made very little difference apart from the fact when it did start there was no black smoke. Could this be aproblem with diesel running back and causing it not to start in the morning? Any help would be very much appreciated as im running out of options-Cheers

Fitting a 12v pump will just mask the problem. Pop the filter off after it's been sitting overnight and see if it's full or empty....if it's empty you have an air ingress leak in the low pressure side of the fuel system and the fuel is siphoning back to tank....this is why it is hard to start in the morning, takes a while to suck the fuel back up to the pump.

Why...?? Euro-4's don't have a lift pump.

Takes less than 5 seconds to heat the glow plugs.

Glowplug technology must have improved over the years i suppose! Seem to recall some vehicles the recommendation was to wait 20-30 secs.
I still do even though i think mine are knackered(daren`t attempt to remove them)

Most Transits don't really need glow plugs to start these days...unless you're in constant freezing sub-zero temps. They're usually there to help with cold engine emissions and will stay on for varying periods of time depending on the ambient temperatures.
