misfire no.2 cylinder..if burnt or bent valve cost to fix??

Postby gasbo » Sun Jan 09, 2022 4:42 pm

seems compression on no.2 cylinder is only 25%..van acceleration very sluggish and uphill.. about 45mph max on flat and labours in 4 and 5th gear...if valve needs replacing how much would it cost if a garage did it? its a 2 litre pinto engine mk3 transit

When you did a compression test did you do the first one and then do a second one after squirting some oil in the cylinder to determine if it’s valves or piston rings/ piston if it’s the valves the readings will be the same if it increases then it maybe piston/ rings problems.

i didnt do it..,the mechanic just said the 2nd cylinder was down on compression, ive just checked the sparkplug in no2 and its abit sooty compared to the other ones...when i did the tappets previously it ran great again but not the last time i did them...

DID YOU ADJUST TWICE IN A MONTH DUE TO IT BEING NOISY/ CAMMY/ TAPPETY OR SOME OTHER REASON????

i did it last august when id given up hope of bad running engine and it worked...ran perfecfly until bolt came out of bottom pulley about 6 weeks ago and suddenly lost power..noticed the dizzy cap had come off slightly so not sure if timing jumped or something..im going to change all the spark plug leads see if that works..doing my head in now..i did the tappets again thinking it would cure it again but didnt work this time..need a mechanic who knows about pintos..too many havent a clue these days

On the start of this thread you said no 2 only had 20% compression so your problem is down to piston /rings/ bore /valves/head gasket/ even cracked head or block if the tappits are set correctly maybe a sticking valve so your problem is unlikely to be electrical.
When you had the compression tested did they give you the readings for all the cylinders in psi I think from memory that a pinto to be good was 150 to 180 psi that maybe for the high compression engine with yours been van it maybe the low compression engine and be lower psi if a lot lower on the other cylinders it maybe that the engine is worn out .

i changed one of the leads tonight ..had a spare old one in garage..it was the one with the low compression i changed, funnily enough it goes better, managed 50mph in 3rd gear and acceleration abit better but not quite right yet...anyway ordered a full set of new spark leads...see it it does the trick..abit happier now, love me old transit

i just wondered if when the bolt come out of the bottom crank pulley and it did something to the timing or dizzy and frazzled the spark leads or is that not possible..strange when i lost power that day the dizzy cap was loose..the rotor arm made a mess of inside the dizzy, scraping it inside
