Oil for life?

Postby Bobble123! » Thu Apr 07, 2022 2:22 pm

Hi, newbie Transit owner here :D

A friend and I have bought a 2003 2.4 RWD ex-school minibus to convert into a camper-ish van for the Isle of Man TT this year.

Now stripped out, it is slowly being welded up and my thoughts turned to the g/box & diff oil as they are probably the original fluids.

I've had a read through but am unsure still as to whether they are oil-for-life or have a service life? Also, which oil and how much.

This'll probably be the first of many questions as I try to resurrect this old van, but any advice would really be appreciated!

It is a 5 sp MT75 g/box I believe and a single rear wheel van if that matters?

Thanks in advance! :) :)

I don't think there is any such thing. I drained the oil out of a low milage Fiat box and it was like an emulsion of oil and water. Change it.

I'm going to say 'MT75 oil' (yes it is a real thing) but there may be a more modern equivalent available these days :)

Not for a mk6 gearbox :) The problem is I can't remember what is correct

In *theory* they are sealed for life - but yes it is a very good idea to change it!

Correct oil for the MT-75 box is Ford spec: WSD-M2C200-C (75W90 gear oil), 1.3 liters.

There are better oils out there though.

My argument for the "sealed for life" issue is...why put a drain and fill plug in them if they're sealed for life.?? I drained the oil on my MT-82 6 speed after only 65k km and it was rather nasty looking and smelling. :(

Same goes for the diff....well worth changing.

Thanks LK :-)

I have found that Opie oils sell 'MT75' oil - I'll be calling them today to check that it is correct for the van I have. There are so many variants and suggestions mentioned on the t'internet.

I agree with the 'for life' point... what is the estimated life and use profile they model this on when deciding it will last?

Hopefully this weekend I'll get the oils done... then back to welding

The stench of old diff oil is something which stays in your memory for life...nasty stuff indeed. :|

Yes I hate the smell of EP 90 but the one that tops that is getting covered in burnt torque converter oil :(
