Sump plug

Postby APR68 » Wed Apr 13, 2022 6:06 pm

Evening folks.
After several attempts at changing the oil in my 99 transit I've given up once again, my issue is undoing the sump plug! Tonight I showed it a brand new set of milwaukee stilsons (borrowed) to no avail.
Question, could it be left hand thread? Im left with a nugget of the original plug, just enough to weld a nut to all being well, but still then I fear chewing the nut off.
Ive read on here tighten to 23 NM think mine is upto 230 nm!
Failing that its going to have to be a new, sump.

Im wondering due to the amount of engine oil leaks if the previous owner chose the top up method rather than a full oil change.

Can you not use the hot spanner on it before trying to undo it

Forget the sump plug nut .. It's probably been thread locked

Get a vaccum pump and suck oil out from the dip stick .

Thanks for the advice guys, hot spanner, im concerned about twisting a chunk of sump off as it is though I've used heat in the past, I don't want to be stuck without transport
As for vacuum pump, would a new sump be more cost effective? Im living off grid in the van.

I had to weld a nut onto my sump plug as it was just a rounded stump, new sump was around £60 when I looked, but it came out with the nut welded on and a new sump plug was around £3.

I paid around £10 for a cheap vaccum pump with pipe kit etc and works well
