Mk7 Transit not starting - no fault codes, no FRP reading

Postby matts09transit » Tue May 17, 2022 2:35 pm

Hi,

I'm in a bit of a sticky one here. I've had 3 different mechanics have a look at this and they are all a bit stumped.

I was driving off down the road and the van started to feel a little funny, like a wasn't fully in control of the throttle. Then it suddenly died. It can turn over fine and runs when spraying easy-start/brake cleaner in the inlet but other than that it won't fire up. When manually checking the fuel injector pipes, there is some pressure as it squirts out when slightly undone... but it seems the injectors are just not switching and letting the fuel in. It sounds like a fuel pump issue but is quite an expensive job on a suspicion.

The strange part is that there are no fault codes. The fuel rail pressure reading reads 0 with blips of a very low 250kPa (see image: https://imgur.com/fwQ4Qkz ). I can't figure out why there are no fault codes? Has anyone experienced anything similar?

The van is an old UK Power Network fleet vehicle where there's a few aftermarket electronics on board.

Very low fuel pressure looks suspiciously like your PRV may have blown. Worth checking at least, pop the return line off the PRV and see if fuel comes out during cranking, if so, she's done for.

Cranking FRP should be close to ~300bar, idle FRP should be ~230bar +/- 10%.

For those wanting the solution, there was a hairline fracture in the fuel filter enclosure causing a leak and therefore an airtrap in the system.
