2018 transit 250 transmission issue

Postby SouthMountian » Fri Jun 17, 2022 6:35 pm

Hello we have a 2018 ford transit 250 van. our issue is that the vans transmission will not engage. the failure occurred without symptoms as it just stopped going in gear after working fine. the van currently starts and runs.159026K on the odometer. the fluid is ok, the shift cable seems fine. the break interlock is working. it shifts out of park and will free wheel. the park indicator will start blinking when its in drive or reverse. the van recently hit a deer in the road with minimal damage. but it has also logged many miles before the problem arose. is there something that would hinder it from going into gear after a collision? we have a Snap-On scanner but it shows no codes. and thru the data stream it shows shifting thru its gears. this is also my first post so hello and thanks to everyone that can help. we have a delivery service and have 18 transits from 2018-2020. 250/350HD and as time goes on I am looking for any technical help I can find. :)

Sounds like it may have physically broken a drive shift or similar.

Have you had a look underneath for something obvious..?? Do you get any gears at all..??

We had it up on the lift and it appears everything is in order. No damage. It shifts out of park. Iam not 100% sure if these transmissions use actually linkage to shift the valve body or out side of the parking paw Solenoid Actuation? I would like to remove the transmission pan at this point but it’s very close to the sun frame making that job look taxing just for a “look see”. Iam basically trying to figure if there are any electronic lockouts before I get to crazy. Talking to the dealer proves to be a dead end. :)

just for fun this is most of the transit fleet in one place. Still learning but what generation would these be? 2018-2020

i have discovered that when you rev the van in park it revs perfect. But when you rev the van in any drive gears the RPMs take of wildly into the redline zone. then back down. seems to me that there must be a sensor not talking to another one?

Here in the UK, we identify this van as a Mk8 Transit, and as yours all seem to be the biggest variety, (LWB High Roof) I would have thought they would be designated a 350 (3500kg GVW)
Our smallest MK8 is a L2H2 (Medium wheel base, medium high roof) because we have the Custom as a smaller van.

ok i see. yes the one i am working on is a 250 single rear wheel model. all our cab and chassis ones with the reefer boxes are 350 HD,s. i talked with a transmission shop and by what we are finding they believe the torque convertor may have broken. they say it is common on these transits. they are not able to get one for a long time because of back orders. probably going to need a full transmission due to metal debris . approx. $6500 US dollars. also back ordered :?

We've not had auto transmission on a Transit since they ended production of the Mk5 in 2000. That is until recently (about the last 5 years, I think) when they've started fitting an autobox to the 2 litre diesel Mk8 and Custom models.
That said, it's probably a very different unit to that fitted to your vans :)
