Fitting MK8 brakes to a MK7

Postby 427ZA » Thu Jan 12, 2023 11:21 pm

I don’t know if this has been covered before, I can’t find any threads on it.
Is there any reason I can’t fit bigger discs and callipers from a MK8 to my MK7 as I find that I can quickly run out of brakes when driving enthusiastically or, more worrying, when I’m pulling a loaded car trailer.
The van is a mapped MK7 2.2 125 T280 with a reasonable chunk more than 125hp.

I’ve measured the pcd of the disc to hub mounting bolts and the wheel pcd, they are identical. I’ve measured the calliper mounting bracket bolt points and they are also identical.
Does anyone know if the hub bearings are identical across both models as well or if the bearings are interchangeable, for instance MK7 bearings in the MK8 hubs?
I have 18” rims so space isn’t an issue.

Whilst there are options for brake upgrades on MK8’s there doesn’t appear to be anything better for MK7’s than genuine Ford discs and pads and they just can’t cope for long when towing the race car.

Any advice gratefully received…..apart from don’t pull a car trailer!

There are upgraded "slotted " brake rotors you can buy for them.

Thank you your reply.
I should probably have said what I have on the van at the moment, drilled and slotted discs front and back with EBC yellow fast road pads. The last time around was genuine discs and pads.
The main problem is when towing. If I brake early and gently I still get a lot of heat build up and, after three roundabouts (I live in MK), I’m relying too heavily on the trailer brakes to stop me and that has resulted in some severe clenching!
I changed the brake fluid for genuine Ford but I still end up with a hard brake pedal.
Normal driving with no trailer and it stops really well.

Maybe it’s just me but the discs look really small for a 2t van which could explain poor heat dissipation.

It’s my first Transit and I love it apart from this minor frustration!

I’d also look at the trailer brakes I used to move a lot of dumpers on a car trailer and when the overrun brakes came on the trailer you could feel them doing the work

The front wheel drive 330/350 mk7,gets the rear wheel drives bigger brakes.
Fronts that is,rears I think are the same size.
