EGR valve bolt access

Hi all,

Feeling the symptoms of a stuck EGR. Gave it a clean using Wynn's EGR cleaner but returning P1402:16-2F and P1409:77-2F even after clearing the codes.

Probably needs replacing and trying to figure out how I'd do the job before buying the part. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to access the 2nd bolt to the EGR pipe. Does the inlet manifold need to be removed for this? Attached a screenshot of a YT vid for the location of the tricky bolt.

I’ve just done this, it’s easily accessible with a socket extension bar & 8mm socket.

i've recently done this... don't expect it to come apart easily. the screws that hold the egr to the cooler on the back of the engine are easily accessible from below the engine. the two that hold the egr to the metal pipe can also be got at from below, but the one at the back can also be accessed from above. just. you'll need a short armed ratchet and extension(s) to get it.

don't be surprised if you can't get the screws undone. i had to extract the egr with the metal pipe still attached, this can be done *carefully* after removing a couple of the coolant pipes.

i take it you've only sprayed the wynn's in the air intake? that won't do much to clean the egr itself.

when you turn the engine off can you hear the egr running a cleaning cycle? whacka whacka whacka from under the bonnet. of not it can be stuck, knacked, or you have a wiring fault.

Thanks greatly for the replies - I appreciate it a lot. Yes it’s a MK7 2.4 RWD. Soz for double posting, trying to find the right place for technical faults. Tried to delete the other post but there’s no button?

sorry, don't have a YT of a working egr, but you can definitely hear it cycling after turning the engine off, if you don't it's not working.

if your thread ever needs moving a mod can do this.

What Noctule said....They sound like a small hacksaw for a few seconds after engine shutdown.

So I didn’t hear a clicking and decided to give it a go. Ordered the part and got to it and snapped the bolt going to the EGR pipe (just as you said Noctule). Sad but I’ll give it a go and try to take it out with the pipe attached.

Came across another problem… can’t figure how to drain the coolant. Before I just clamped it but I guess I’ll need to drain it fully now. Had a look for the drain valve and can’t find anything like the + shaped notch it’s supposed to be - just a valve which doesn’t do anything when turned 90deg (see pic). Is the drain valve blocked? Any other way to drain it?

I’m enjoying it all but a lot of things are a first for me.

They don't look like the pic....they're actually a plastic phillips head in a recess in the lower passenger side of the radiator...pain in the ar$e too if they're stuck.

You're best off just disconnecting the lower radiator hose.

Make sure you isolate the batteries before attempting to extract the pipe and egr. The pipe is bolted to the block just above the starter motor, and so on top of the usual risks involved there is a chance that the pipe will get holed if it touched the live connection on the starter.

If you end up getting a replacement pipe off eB*y make sure the screw holes (to the egr) are clear and the tube to the inlet manifold hasn't been squashed.

Hi, well I am glad I read this post as I was wondering what the h**l that noise was, I have several times stood in front of the van and thought, OMG that sounds like an expensive repair.
But here is the thing, I haven't heard it chuffing/whaking lately, so no noise is no good?
Is it supposed to do this every time?

Yes. Each time the ignition is cycled on/engine start/off, the EGR valve goes through a self clean cycle, sounds like a small hacksaw for a couple of seconds.

Installed it successfully (except a couple coolant leaks at the ends but should be easy enough to fix). Thanks everyone!

Hearing a whistling when driving which I assume is the turbo - only whistles at higher revs. Something to be concerned about?
