Overheating -Is is Head gasket, or something else?

Hello guys.

I have a 2005 Transit Campervan conversion, it was previously an ambulance.
It has been overheating, and last week I had it checked for exhause gases in the radiatior. It failed.

It has only been overheating when working hard, such as towing a trailer on a motorway.
The temperature gauge will go up to the ¾ mark and it goes into limp mode until it’s cooled down. Usually slowing down to 40mph is enough.
Driving on slower roads or without a trailer, it runs at normal temperature.
It is also using a small amount of water from the radiator.


I am assuming it's the head gasket, but I would like to check that it can't be anything else?


It's a Mk6 from 2005.
2.4l Duratorq-TDCi 135bhp.


I'm located near Ilkeston in Derbyshire. Does anyone know of anywhere that might be able to takeon the repair work?

CHT sensor is a common fail on Mk6 and Euro-4 Mk7's. If makes the PCM "think" it has overheated and will go into limp mode or shut the engine down.

Surely that wouldn't cause it to fail the test for exhaust gases in the radiator though?



It's worth mentioning that I have already fitted a new thermostat and header tank lid, as well as flushed out the radiator

Your egr cooler is probably leaking.

The Mk6 2.4 L models do not have an electric radiator fan, but a fan driven by a belt on a viscose clutch. The viscous clutch often fails, it is difficult to check it, because the fan is constantly rotating anyway, but it is not known with what slip. Maybe it's worth changing the clutch?
