Adding spot lights

Postby Isupchap » Wed Jun 14, 2023 7:08 am

Hey, I’ve googled this to death and I’ve just ended up confusing the life out myself so apologies in advance if I’m asking a stupid question.

I’d like to add spot lights to my van using the holes in the front bumper.
I want this to be via a separate single switch on the dash toggle on/off.

It’s the wiring I’m confused with.

Can I go from battery to switch with an inline fuse

Then positive from switch to one light and piggyback to the other light.
And
Negative from switch to batter and splice both negatives from the lights to that.

Google seems to give mixed opinions on if I need a relay or not

If someone has a diagram or any information that would be great

Thanks

What you've described is OK. There's also other ways too as you found on google.
Without a relay, the lights might not be 100% bright
With relay the circuit is more complicated but has advantages like easier to wire in the switch.
You probably want to have the spots turn off when take key out.
If you want you can try out a connection scheme without needing to bolt everything down in place. You can check the lights and switch all works with a temporary 'lash-up' first.

most simplest is
POS BATTERY-O-----O-FUSE-O------O-SWITCH-O------O,O-SPOTS

NEG BATTERY-O--------------------------------------------O,O-SPOTS

I’ve always used a relay for the power and for trigger Side I’ve used a two way rocker switch the centre terminal goes to the relay then I take a feed from the headlight circuit on one terminal and the second from a always live supply depending on which way you fit the switch into the dash push the switch down and the spots will come on there own or up and they come on with main beam .

That'll be MK-2 :D when a relay's retro-fitted + altering the way the switch works

Yes that’s right the last switch I used to use was a mk3 escort 2 speed heater fan switch I had fan speed 1 for switching on with the head lights and 2 for switching on all the time the last time I used them was the mk6 fitted 3 in the ash tray compartment not done anything with the mk8 nowhere to fit them .
