EGR or Turbo?

Postby sidneysausage » Wed Aug 09, 2023 5:55 pm

So I have a 2009 2.4 L Minibus that no longer goes up hills unless I drop several gears and it generally feels underpowered. I live in Scotland where they do hills properly :D . It also pumps out massive amounts of black smoke when struggling. Is there an easy way to tell if this is an EGR valve issue or a turbo one?? I'm voting for Turbo myself (OK that's just a guess). I changed the air filter, cleaned the filthy MAF sensor, and replaced the fuel filter. Would running Forscan help ( used it to check for codes but there were none)

Check all your boost pipes for splits, a small hole/split will cause boost loss and black smoke, literally take them off and inspect them, while there off check the turbo for play

What our Ned said...Black smoke is usually a split boost pipe or intercooler. Check all the boost pipes and intercooler, look for oil stains on the pipes and intercooler...this will be a sign of leakage as there's always a very fine oil mist inside the intake from the crankcase breather system.

MAF sensors don't usually get too dirty....and you sure you didn't clean the MAP sensor??....They get quite manky.

Stuck open egr can cause a lot of black smoke (in certain cases, so much so that you can't see behind you and it's not got enough power to pull the skin off a rice pudding.

If EGR was stuck it'd throw a code at least.

Aye that’s why I suggested boost pipes as egr normally throws a fault light/code, I can tell when my egr is sticking as it feels “choked” but still gets up hills

Thanks for the advice, I'll get the pipes off at the weekend and take a good look. Does the intercooler itself leak too then?
The MAF sensor had a black film and fluff on it so that got a clean but I've cleaned the MAP too and that really was encrusted in shite. Hopefully, it's a damaged pipe cos I think I can cope with that.

So I had some spare time and decided to remove all the boost pipes and inspect them and the intercooler. Annoyingly there are no signs of damage, no oil marks, no splits. I guess the intercooler could be holed but I can't see any obvious damage. Things I have noticed are the EGR is blanked off and the link to the turbo waste gate is broken. Does that mean the engine has been over-boosted and hence the leak is caused by this? I can see the injectors' surrounding area is oily, is this another clue or pretty standard on a Transit. Any advice on what to look for or replace next would be much appreciated. Perhaps if I run Forscan on a test drive I can check the MAP reading?

Our 2008 2.4 broke the linkage to the turbo waste gate, the pin on the linkage came off.
Cleaned it up and tack welded it back on, made sure it moved and reconnected the link rod to vacuum valve and it's never been a problem since, must be about 8years now.

I've run out of ideas, if anyone can suggest something?

If you're turbo wastegate linkage is broken, this needs to be sorted. Forscan will indeed give you all the info you need.
