Not starting

Postby jasoncarlile » Sat Aug 12, 2023 11:03 am

Hi everyone, I've got a cab chassis:
VIN number:
WF0CXXGBFC3J06450
Engine:2.4L Duratorq DI (120/125PS)
Power: 125PS
Wheels: RWD
Year: 2004
Transmission: 5-Speed Manual Transmission - MT75
Steering: RHD.
I bought it nearly a year ago, motor ran really well, but gear box was hard to move between 3 and 4th. Got a mechanic to remove gearbox and sent away to get fixed(took nearly 3 months). Gearbox came back and was refitted, along with a new clutch. Went to start up, but wouldn't- just revved for a second or 2 then abruptly cut off, every time. Got him to check the wiring (tried to get a reading from the computer but it wasn't talking to his machine), since then it will turn over normally but won't start. I tried swapping crank sensor and speed sensor harness - still no go. Just bought and fitted new crank sensor, but still not working. Checked fuses, all look OK. Fuel is getting to injectors (cracked them open a bit and plenty of fuel was squirting out when trying to start).
Seems strange that it started and ran great before the new clutch and reconditioned gearbox was done.
Any other ideas? Thanks.

Mk6 is "NOT" OBD-ll compliant, so most newer readers won't work. Forscan or IDS will work.

Was the flywheel replaced at the same time..?? If so, was it the correct one..?? The TDDi and TDCi flywheels are different. You need to find out if you're getting a crank sensor signal.

Thanks for replying. I'll try to get someone with one of those scanners.
The flywheel wasn't replaced.
Thanks :)

You can download Forscan yourself onto a windows lappy, it's free.

You'll need a modified ELM-327 as an interface though...~20quid.

Hello. It's been a while I've been here.
In response to your issue, I am sure the mechanic replaced the wire-clip to the crank sensor with the one at the rear end of the gearbox (it's been long I worked on one of these, but I think it's the wire for the speedometer). Both have two pins and exact same clipping formation. When mistakenly swapped, engine will keep cranking as normal but won't start.

Kindly respond back so we'd know what the really culprit is.

Take care.

I've heard (don't know if applies to transits but worth a try) that you can look at the rev counter whilst its turning over and see 200-300 rpm on the rev counter, if you don't see that 200-300 rpm ..then its something to do with the crank sensor.

all the best.mark
