1990 petrol carburettor question

Postby Ron Peponis » Wed Apr 03, 2024 10:09 pm

I have a Ford Transit T120 1990 Reg petrol engine 1993cc base with an Auto Sleeper Top. I need to replace the carburettor. It is the original engine with 63K miles. I am not sure if it is a MK2 or 3 how do I tell? Any suggestions of where to purchase the correct carb?

May be wrong ..think it's called a "Pierburg 2E" or "Pierburg 2E3", at least that's what was on my 1.8 pinto engined sierra. of the same era

and if it craps out on you, it will probably be diaphragms ..readily available on ebay as part the rebuild kit.

so if its says "Pierburg 2E3" on it ..that's what you search for
so if its says "Pierburg 2E" on it ..that's what you search for

The 2e3 has an electrically heated auto choke, the 2e does not

note if its LPG ..then for sure- its diaphragms ...as they dry out without petrol

well i cant make a suggestion until you ID the carb .

if it is a peirburg 2e etc

this diaphragm is part of an accelerator pump that squirts neat petrol into the carb, through a tube that is pointing into the flow of the air.

when not working ..the engine will tick over , but not speed up and bog down and stall. may not even tick over .. you'll use huge thottle amounts to go anywhere ..and it will be doing under 10 mpg. as petrol will be pouring through when not needed. not coming through when needed.

Another thing that can go wrong with this carb if its a peirburg or a solex ..is the auto choke .

no manual button to turn on or off the choke ..has an auto choke ...controlled by coolant entering a chamber on the carb ..that warms up a bimetalic clock spring ,... to which is attached a cloke plate...that revolves when the clock spring becomes heated.
To speed up the process they also added on the 2E3 an electric heating element.

The magnesium the carb is made out of corrodes, especially where steel parts pass through it ..resulting in stickage of the choke mechanism, the electric choke heater can go open circuit ..this means it will take longer to turn off .

mechanicals can be disabled by previous owners, when they don't understand how to fix them.

Because it so old the magnesium can corrode leading to float bowl full of sediment , jets that are impossible to remove and clean.
Previous owners / botchers ..screw things up ..take them apart and damage them. as they don't understand how to get these corroded parts out without damaging them.

1990 is mk3 transit
Petrol would have the Ford VV carb
(Variable Venturi)
From factory,if it’s been replaced or upgraded it’ll likely be a Weber.

VV has a squarer top like below, you can rebuild the carb although if it is a VV i wouldn't bother, they are an OK carb when they work, when they play up they are a right royal pain in the arse
