Engine wont start P2279

Postby omarmekic » Tue Apr 09, 2024 2:57 pm

I have a 2018 Ford Transit with a 2.0 engine, manual transmission. It was running fine without any issues. Recently, while driving over rough terrain, the vehicle experienced significant vibrations. This resulted in the engine shutting down, and now the dashboard displays "service asap". The vehicle won't start now. Trying to start it almost sounds like there's no compression. You can mostly hear the starter motor running. There's also an oil leak right between the engine and the transmission, coming from above. The oil is not coming from the oil filter. The error code read is P2279. Does anyone know what it might be? The oil level is ok btw.

The 2.0L engine has a wet cam belt, known for giving up and disintegrating inside the engine and causing all sorts of dramas.

How can we check if the engine has damage without actually opening the engine?

You can't.

If you’re lucky the rough terrain has loosened something in the air system for that code, but I’d be surprised if that caused a non starter.
If you’re unlucky the vacuum pump has failed (which is located near where your leak is) because of the belt and it’s going to be expensive.

engine spinning over faster than usual is a sign of no compression, which can be caused by bent valves from cambelt failure ..a quick look down the oil filler hole can "sometimes" confirm if the belt is damaged.
one other symptom is camshaft sensor fault - P0342 error

all the best.mark
