mk7 tappet noise oil use

mk 7 2.4 rwd has a tappet like noise that varies from just able to hear to sounding like a hammer . it starts easily runs on 4 cylinders no miss plenty of power .if idling at traffic lights blows a puff of blue smoke . does not appear to blow smoke while working . but using 2 litres of oil in 500 klms. do these engines have valve guide that can come loose thankyou bob

Are you sure it's a tappet noise and not diesel knock..?? These engines have hydraulic valve lash adjusters so tappet noise is highly unlikely. Oil use and blue smoke could be turbo seal leakage...check the intercooler for silly amounts of oil....it's possible for the engine to "run-away" if it runs on the engine oil in the inlet/intercooler.

These engines rarely do valve guides/seals and the base engine is quite robust.

intake is dry. the noise seems to be coming from the front of the engine in the exhaust area .some times it is quiet you have to listen for it other times you can hear it twenty feet away. i drove it home 1500 klm and oil use remained constant. the reason i said valve guild was because i had a fe ford truck v8 that had loose valve guides thanks

Like Laird knooby said it could be diesel knock your hearing which could be damaging the piston/piston rings etc, is there oil blow out around the injector seals? Or anywhere else due to excessive back pressure (damaged rings or pistons, or poorlyseated injectors)?? that's a lot of oil to be burning, did you check the wear in the turbo impeller, oil could be pissin into the exhaust side of these to cause run away problems not just inlet side

update the knocking was failed hydraulic lifter oil use was stuck oil rings
