Rear Suspension Clunking.

Postby Jezclayton » Wed Aug 28, 2024 6:43 pm

Hi all and hope you are enjoying summer.

Every time I go over a bump or pothole, I get a clunk from the rear suspension. To put this into context, this is my 2022 DCIV which has done about 28,000 miles. The van is not particularly heavily laden as the attached pictures of the rear wheel arch clearance and bump stop positions will attest. I confirmed the clunk was coming from the suspension after quite literally emptying the rear (including floor and bulkhead) and then listening from the back. Since my legs and arms are too short, my wife was driving at the time. The clunk could be felt coming through the floor at the rear axle position. The clunk was more evident as you cleared the bump. So if I went over a sleeping policeman you would tend to hear the clunk as you came off.

Is this just normal Transit noises or is something perhaps amiss. As you will see from my signature, this isn't the first DCIV I have had and I don't recall this noise before, at least my head wasn't tuned into it.

Would be grateful for your thoughts.

Jez

Worn brake caliper slides make a hell of a noise
Try touching the brake or pulling handbrake slightly going over the bumps
Drove me nuts

Thanks for the replies. Just been out in the van again and the knocking is most definitely on the OSR axle. Have checked exhaust and that is fine plus well away from party. I have attached additional pictures of both the OSR leaf spring and damper and struggle to see anything obviously wrong. The stain on the label isn't oily to touch but I wish it was if you get me. I have only actually had the van for a week or so, having purchased it from my local Ford dealership. It is going back in on Friday to have this knocking looked at. I was just hoping to be able to pinpoint something obviously wrong beforehand.

Transit rear springs have a habit of cracking at the curved end where it bolts to the body.

It's quite hard to see unless you have a close look.

is it me, or does that last picture look as if the shock is close to the chassis rail compared with other similar pic of maybe the other side.

there are marks there as well ..on the chassis rail . like someone shoved a screw driver in the gap. to see how much room there was.

Thank you all for you responses. Top prize goes to Mark who suspected the shock all along :D.

Ford garage just phoned me to say van requires new shock absorber and they would like to keep the van until next Wednesday to fit it. Don't know what planet they live on but I need the van to make a living. Told them to book it back in for next Thrursday.

Presumably they will change both rear shocks or is it OK to just replace one? The van is still under warranty.

Really they are supposed to be replaced in pairs, Ford had many different companies manufacturing for them and there is good chance if only one fitted, then it may have different damping performance than the other one .

for instance, at worst, you could end up with one being a gas shock absorber and the other one not.
