Mk 7 Transit 2.4 Backfiring

Postby in_transit_vanlife » Sat Sep 14, 2024 4:05 am

Hi All

My 2008, VM Transit, 2.4 turbo diesel has started backfiring on acceleration. Its only noticeable before its up to temperature, does one or two backfires when accelerating then accelerates cleanly.
No warning lights and no codes. Seems to accelerate and pull strong when temp is normal.

I also had issues a few times with orange cog light iluminating & going into limp mode when under load going up steep hills from a standing start. 2nd gear work. Stopped, turn off and restart and back to normal.
Had this happen a few times whilst on a road trip holiday. Checked with the code reader when got home but no codes stored.
Any ideas or suggestions where to look?
Thanks

If it has gone into limp mode and/or the COG light has come on...there "WILL" be fault codes stored.

What fault/code reader are you using..?? Do your interior lights work..??

Backfire can hear it as a bang in the exhaust under the driver I think.
Scantool is Topdon Arti link 200. Cheap one I picked up maybe off Ebay?? I got code P0234 turbo overboost first time it did it as put code reader on straight away but the other 5 times didn't put the code reader on straight away. Left it a few weeks and 5000km before we got home to check and no stored codes. Interior lights works as they should.

You need to get a decent code reader onto it...Forscan is your friend. The "Topdon" units are just garden variety generic readers and probably can't cope with the Transit protocols.

Thanks, was looking at getting Forscan, I saw your older post with recommended cable so will get that. I have a Mac laptop but my partner has Windows. Does Forscan work the same on each or is one operating system the preferred / better option.

Forscan full version only works on Windows...you can get a "lite" version for iOS but functionality is greatly reduced.

Got Forscan and checked codes - only stored one was P068A and that was at a mileage way after the issues when it went into limp mode.

Has someone "attempted the learns" previously..?? P068A is logged when the learns fail to complete writing to non-volatile memory successfully.

Not in the last 3 years or so since I've had the van, don't know the history before that. Cleared the code and nothing new appearing.

EGR is something on the list to pull out and give it a clean as I've never done. Pulled out the sensor on intake manifold and it was so gunked up it was unreal.

Ran Forscan with engine running and all the EGR readings changed from the idle readings when revved engine. I would presume its opening up etc and working as it should.

EGR should be open at idle a low rpm/throttle position...it gradually closes as the rpmthrottle position and load increases.

Sometimes the valve itself doesn't move, they often break the shaft or stepper motor gears, the little stepper motor itself does move, this is where the system gets it's sensor info from....the valve can actually be broken and not show up as broken.
