Prop shaft bearing.

Postby Harvy » Sun Oct 06, 2024 3:14 pm

I’ve been having a look under my Newley purchased van today and come across a prop shaft bearing that has completely gone. They don’t look too complex to replace. I can’t seem to find the part on fords website, is there somewhere else I should be looking for genuine parts? I’ve found a pair of centre bearing on eBay for only £30. Would these be alright?

Is there a good place to buy new transit parts? I’ve never had a van before so just used Gsf or Eurocarparts when I needed non genuine parts.

Thanks in advance.

Depending on the van and spec, there are two diameters of center bearings 30mm and 35mm

If you have calipers big enough you can measure the prop tube to hopefully give a better idea of which one you have before dismantling.

What I've found is (But don't quote me on this)....
Tube diameter
80mm = 30mm bearing
85mm = 35mm bearing

There's cheap and then there's cheap.
I just go to my local independent motor factors and get a decent branded version.
It's good to nurture a decent relationship with a local factors, as, if you find something that doesn't fit you can walk in and discuss the options and you can work out between you the exact part you want/need.

Be aware the splines can be very tight to come apart on some propshafts and mark the each joint to make sure it gets back on the correct orientation.

Thanks for the advice. I had meant to put a signature in describing my van before I posted, I’ve done it now. I will give my local spares place a call tomorrow and see if they can get parts. My gearbox is a 6speed so it would appear to need the 35mm bearings.

I've had both sizes on what appears on paper to be identical vans.

I got a 31mm bearing from my local motorfactors and it fits fine!? The chap there was convinced it was the only one that would fit my van. I’ve ordered a second one to replace the second bearing. I didn’t take my callipers with me so couldn’t accurately measure the shaft itself. I’ll try to remember next time.
