Transit mk6 LPG

Postby Jordonjay » Mon Jan 13, 2025 2:06 am

I got a mk6 lpg only had it a month or so always had diesels, the trouble I got is when you press the lpg the switch over starts you here the first click then on the second click it just cuts it out like it’s used the last of the petrol, very rare occasions it’s actually tried running on lpg but misfired and lack of power light also keeps flashing,I’m presuming plugs as lpg finds week spots in the system ect, does anyone know the best plugs to run on these, also what the mpg should roughy be as I’ve seen a massive difference from diesel to the petrol, I’m nearly using twice as much fuel as usual in a diesel, was hoping lpg might help a little, cheers

Should've got a diesel mate. LPG powered machines are well known for being temperamental at best. Your Mk6, even if it is one of the last built will be at least 19 years old now...things deteriorate over time.

Petrol machines don't deliver very good mpg compared to a diesel...and LPG is worse again....especially with a relatively heavy Transit.

I'm afraid I don't know the LPG system well enough to make any helpful comments....never owned one.

One click is the solonoid on the tank the other is the solonoid on the vapouriser. these can go faulty

i can only tell you about a system i fitted to my rover 420 -- Italian made "omvl dream 21"

if was a sequential programmable (mapped) LPG injection ...it did do less MPG than petrol , something like 30 percent less. but had the same performance

The car before that was a sierra with a pinto engine ..that i fitted a Dutch Grout system to, no sequential ..and had a doughnut type mixer on the carb ....the car was slower, but it did better lpg mpg than petrol ..i was also able to use the octane adjust connectors to bring the timing closer to TDC, via a switch ..because lpg is higher octane... the octane adjust connectors where on most ford vehicles made at or around 1980 - 1990 . can be found by the coil ..they are coloured blue and red . blue is two degrees ..red is 4 degrees ..and both together equal 6 degrees. when.. cant remember ..think earthed.

so timing was set at 2 degrees before tdc for running on lpg......and the octane adjusts via incab switch were used for petrol to take it back to 8 degrees tdc.

The trouble is usually with the injectors themselves, sometimes you can get bad lpg with tar in it..that clogs the injectors ..so you could take these apart and clean...i didn't always do that, i took the pipe off the from the vaporiser to manifold and filled it with wd40...then went through switch over from petrol to lpg several times ..often stalling to clear it.

The plugs, dizzy, rotor arm and cap and leads have to be spot on. the plugs benefit from having 20 percent less gap ...as the gas is an insulator ...the spark would rather jump anywhere but across the plug gap, out of the leads ..everywhere.

i did experiment with magnacore leads and multi-electrode plugs ..i seen no benefit.

Cheers mark, I’ll have a look into it see what I can do and once it’s running on lpg if in fact it makes any difference to the mpg at this rate it’s hardly worth taking it to work.worst case it keeps being thirsty then it’ll just get sold it’s a solid truck with really low mileage don’t owe me a lot so not to concerned but thanks anyway

when first did a conversion the price difference per litre was something like 98 pence patrol ,24 pence lpg

now it up there over £1 for lpg and £138 for petrol so gone from being 1/4 of the price to 3/4 of the price ..add on your 30 percent loss in mpg ......and no benefit ..well only one, that is clean engine oil.
