mystery issue

Postby Dex86 » Fri Jan 17, 2025 12:08 am

I have a ford transit tipper 2015, last week all lights on dashboard come up and then the speedo and rev counter stopped working. done the tests for battery and alternator and both batteries and 2 new alternators fitted (one returned to ford as faulty) its had a its had a BMS reset via Forscan but there is still not charge being generated. all testings have been done and the are no loose or corroded wires. anyone have any ideas as to what this can be.

thanks in advance

Main feed wire to the alternator, may have broken or come off where it’s bolted to the starter main terminal.
Or it’s had a starter motor fitted and someone’s left it off….

cheers for the reply Frag, if it was only the one alternator that was fitted id say a possibility but the mechanic fitted two new ones from ford and neither are making a difference to any of the testing. he is arranging a technician to come take a look but not available for 1 week. very annoying situation when its our workhorse and needed on the road :(

the mechanic have said he has done all testing and can't find any reason for it to not be working and in 30 years doing the job he feel defeated. by it. I did see someone in the forums about the towbar wiring can sometimes create an issue with electrics so hopefully try removing that and see if successful

It doesn’t matter how many alternators he fits,or what brand they are if that feed wire isn’t connected….
It’s at the starter motor end of wire so nowhere near alternator, quite difficult to access

The fact you’ve had your original, and then 2 other alternators fitted with no change should tell you it’s not the alternators that are bad….

Towbar electrics can affect canbus, usually the cluster or heater panel will not work or power up at all..
Not gonna be that.

Could be a main earth issue (the one from the starter to the chassis) but you’d have starting problems too if so.

Substituting earth and power leads using jump leads should help narrow the fault down,
Unplugging the smaller (smart charge) connector from alternator should also make it default to standard charging.
