Diesel Injection Timing?

Im swapping diesel pumps, the new VE pump has less lift & duration than the old one. My question is, is it the start of the injection the critical setting,? as with less duration the injection event starts later & ends sooner. I can not set it to start at the same time & have peak lift at the same time, its one or the other. Or should I just split the difference? iThanks

What engine and why is the pump different?

Its on a MK6 2.4tdi, the standard pump is controlled by electronics & Im fitting a one wire VE pump, the internal cam wheels have different lift & duration.
This conversion has been done before & it works well, I want to get it correct the first time & not piss about taking it apart to adjust the timing.
