Benimar '25 Ford Transit MK8? Mk9? EcoBlue 2.0 engine oil

Postby Pasechnik22 » Fri Mar 07, 2025 5:43 am

Hi all. We just bought Benimar 2025 Ford Transit chassis 2.0 EcoBlue motorhome.
I am not sure if my vehicle is MK8 or MK9.

I used to US Ram ecosystem, where it is super easy to find any info in 5 minutes. Ford EU is just another story...

As always, I like to have my consumables on my garage shelf waiting instead of looking for them when I need something. So I started with engine oil. I tried EU Ford, they sent me to local Ford dealer... OK, I sent emails to a bunch of Spain Ford dealers... 1 of them was SO KIND to reply with the answer saying that I need to use "5w30 WSS-M2C913-C"..

Googling brought 2 answers... basically this EcoBlue 2.0 engine uses 2 types of Ford approved oils:

1. Ford WSSM2C950-A 0w30 Ford-Castrol Magnatec 0W30 D is official oil
2. Ford WSS-M2C913-C (or D) Ford-Castrol Magnatec 5W30 A5 is official oil

Both oils are great oils but different specs.

Castrol Magnatec 0W30 D is newer specs oil ASEA C2 Mid SAPS for newer diesel engines with aftertreatment systems (SCR, DPF, etc)

Castrol Magnatec 5W30 A5 is older specs oil ACEA A5/B5 Full SAPS (nothing about aftertreatment systems)

I found a bunch of Ford official online manuals for 2017 Transits and they use newer specs oil Castrol Magnatec 0W30 D

But at the same time 2019+ Transits use older specs oil Castrol Magnatec 5W30 A5

So, how comes, newer vehicle with more advanced aftertreatment exhaust system uses older specs oil which doesn't even mention exhaust aftertreatment systems, but older vehicle uses new specs oil?

Both older and newer Transits have wet belts, both have the same engines....
Do I miss something? Did Ford "downgraded" oil use for a reason?

Once Ford decided to use dumb wet belts to have +1% fuel economy but now they use less efficient oil and get -1% fuel economy....

Can someone shine a light on this situation?

all i know is older oil had zinc in the oil (ZDDP) an anti-wear additive that could damage catalysts..the newer stuff does not have it .

perhaps ford have decided that the zddp protects the belt ..and rather than destroy engines they would rather you replace cats.

Thanks for reply. I am still trying to what was the reason to go back to older specs oil. It doesn't look like ZDDP is great for protecting rubber belt in engine oil, but who knows?

Same difficulty in understanding ford custom:

2012>2016 (old engine 2.2 - timing chain ) WSS-M2C913-D (SAE 5W30)
2016>2021 (new engine 2.0 - wet belt) WSS-M2C950-A (SAE 0W30)
2021>2024 (new engine 2.0 - wet belt) WSS-M2C913-D (SAE 5W30)

If the belt has the same part number, why revert to the oil used for the old metal chain engine?
Has the 0w30 been found to have other disadvantages?
Do the "middle years’" 2016>2021 continue with the old 0w30 just so they don't recall all the "user manuals with wrong WSS"?

The 2.0s produced after 28/06/2021 use the 5W30 WSS-M2C913-D while the firsts use the 0W30 M2C950-A.

I always suspected it is something related to the wetbelts (At the same time is when they did the recall) but can't be sure.

Cheers,

David

I also tried and wrote in several forums with the most disparate answers.
‘different pistons’ even though aftermarket parts provide the same code for all 2.0 engine
‘different oil pump’ even though aftermarket parts provide the same part number for all 2.0 engine
‘different belt’ even though aftermarket parts supply the same part number for all 2.0 engine

But even I begin to think that simply for Ford to change the car manuals of all Tranist produced from 2016>2021 to change the type of oil recommended, is a colossal job that they didn't want to do, already the story of the reduction in belt life they didn't put too much effort into communicating it to the owners.
Why change oil when it is the owners who are spending for a more expensive oil?

some of the oil grades are not about anything, but: ...how much soot they can hold between oil changes ..the thinner the grade of oil equals = the more soot it can hold ..and longer oil change intervals are the result.

so with them recently reducing the oil change service interval ..they maybe decided they could go to the 5w 30 grade... as they did not need an oil that would hold up for plus 20,000 miles

so thinner grade was for longevity of oil before it became full of soot and not about protecting engine with fancy oil ..
