What you can legally tow will be on the vin plate.I don’t think the engine power has anything to do with it if it’s the same physical weight capacity vehicle .

This is my argument to the company that has sold us the van they are hell bent on saying it will tow 3.5 ton but the vin plate is telling me 2050kg. cheers for the reply :D

What does the V5C say under the trailer weight?

If the Max Train Weight - Max Gross Vehicle weight is 2050kg, that doesn't necessarily mean 2050kg is the upper limit.

The V5C will give the maximum trailer weight. In this case (just as an example) it could be 2500kg - in which case you could tow 2500kg, but you you would lose the 450kg difference from what the vehicle could carry.

2050kg sounds VERY low for a twin wheeler though - the mk6 and 7s were 2700/2800kg?

The 4 numbers on the VIN plate - in order are

Max Vehicle Mass
Max Train Weight
Max Front Axle Weight
Max Rear Axle Weight.
Lucas Laser 2000/IDS
95 Pre Production DRW TD Highcube
95 Hallmark
96 150 100PS LWB Hi-Top
96 Autosleeper Duetto
06 Mk7 (scrap)
09 140PS T330S 2.2

Hi
Check the vehicles plate and stick to it.
I have a 2020 leader 350 AWD.
This is carrying more transmission/axle weight and has the highest rear axle plated weight capacity of 2250 kg.
The vans max permissible gross weight is 3500 kg but any specified axle weight supersedes this figure, if you are escorted to a weigh bridge.
My max allowed train weight (vehicle and trailer) is 6000 kg which leaves 2500 kg for any trailer and its load, if the van is also maxed out to 3500 kg and within its axle weight limit.
A trailer also adds to the axle weight, the down force on the tow ball needs to be accounted for.
The down force is usually set at around 10% (5% to 15%) of the trailer weight, but this is dependant on the capability of the tow bar fitted.
This additional down force needs to be accounted for if your vans load also puts it near its axle limits.
A rule of thumb is the 85% rule, your vehicle weight should be at least 85% of the towed weight.
I could tow 3500 kg as my vehicles kerb weight is 2383 kg and totals less than 6000. But it puts me below 85% (2975) of the towed weight.
Its marginal and would be ok if driven carefully, but 3000 KG would be a better match for my vehicle.

Its all fairly straight forward, just don't exceed the limits set on your plate.
Don't run a light van and a heavy trailer to keep within your max train weight, this could be unstable.
