Weird No-Start Condition - Help!

Postby PatrickL » Tue Jun 24, 2025 4:28 pm

I searched the forums for this issue but came up empty.

Have a strange puzzle. The AC clutch was not engaging in our 2017 Transit 250, 3.7L NA. In diagnosing I swapped out the #12 fuel pump relay in the engine compartment with the #10 AC Clutch relay (same part.) Attempted to start vehicle but crank and no start. This led me to believe the AC Clutch relay was bad.

Swapped the relays back so I could drive to get a new AC clutch relay, but again crank and no start. Acting like no fuel pressure. I guessed that whatever had blown the AC Clutch relay blew the fuel pump relay, so I got two new relays and replaced both. Again, crank and no start.

Checked all fuses related to engine control, ignition, fuel pump, etc. All are good.

Guessed then that the ECM had flagged a problem and was killing the ignition in some way. Disconnected the negative battery terminal for 3 minutes to allow ECM to reset. Reconnected, again crank and no start.

Now I'm stuck. Anyone have any suggestions? No error codes in OBDII.

Well unfortunately we don't have access to any parts diagrams for the 3.7 litre version of the ford transit. and not much knowledge here on these large v6 petrol; engines ..as many here are into diesel , small diesels up to 2.5lL and not petrol or gas as they call it in the USA.

A guess - if any help at all - - as i just don't know if its the same with diesel and petrol
A place to look now i think ..because of recent posts here about the fuel system on recent DIESEL transits is ABOVE THE TANK there i think you will find an item called ...well
Some call it a relay .. some call it a module .. some call it a unit
on other transits Parts diagram calls it "control assy - fuel pump drive"

best place to find the answers for this ..as ford Transit USA forum a bit lacking in participation -meaning not busy ..

is the Ford F150 FORUMS as they have same engine and the electronics and the controls and fueling system

all the best.mark

Disconnecting the battery does nothing except require you to reset the clock and radio code.....it does not reset the ECU.

@knobby1 how would one go about resetting the ECU? Does it seem likely to you that that is the issue?

You may need to take it to a dealer...possibly Forscan can do it also....not sure on the later models.

Well there are some basic checks you could do - saying this 'cause all you mentioned is fuses and relays.

1. Pull a spark plug out , get some one to crank it, whilst you position the spark plug whilst attached to the lead with the threaded part against a good earth ..the cylinder head etc..get a friend to crank it ,. you are looking for the spark jumping the gap . if yes go to number two. no spark go to number 3
2. Re-install spark plug ,squirt engine starter spray into the manifold as near to the engine as possible ...through a vacuum hose connection perhaps, ...If it momentary starts or tries to start... You have a fuel problem - pump ..or fuel system has been disabled by the PCM.
3. NO spark - you have a problem with the electronics , that could be a number of things crank position sensor , cam position sensor ..or its been disabled by PCM - because of another problem. or your anti theft system is playing up.

OR - maybe your Scanner isn't up to it .

if so .
Forscan - that's what they recommend here .

NOTE: you can use forscan to get correct fault codes with proper explanation of them - a generic fault code reader may be somewhat misleading, or doesn't work

"Forscan" is FREE software that you download to a laptop..you buy the interface cable -- this is just the cable, you need a laptop)
You can join the forscan forum ..again free, to get the software and more answers.

https://forscan.org/forum/

Then you come here list the fault codes here ..and we will try to work out the problem.
