Any keen welder in Manchester Stockport area?

Postby xelaris » Tue Jul 15, 2025 2:33 pm

Failed MOT mostly because of rust - apparently some jobs around the front wheels area is needed - is there anyone in the area who can help my MK6? Willing to pay a fair price (of course).
Most gargages don't do welding (i.e. they rent a space to a mobile welder) and some can't take larger vans (e.g. with a luton storage area like mine).

welding on any old transit is by owner only ..if you have to pay someone, then the cost may exceed the value of buying a good used one

people who are in the ulez zone around London are selling cheap

look at this one, looks good and honest to me, 179,000, 12 months MOT ..and just a hint of rust peaking through with no attempted cover up and what ..5 years younger than yours, look at the super clean and looked after engine bay , at £2,495.00

had welding done over the last 4 years though, up to then non .

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/365575585035?

ulez ebay specials

put in sw1 as post code and within 25 miles

EDIT

I made a boloocks of that

it defaulted to my area ... and i didnt notice

try sw1p 1aa and 25 miles for even better bargains

I've checked prices of used Ford Transit - mine has the Luton cab and I need that for a camper conversion.
Being sorn I run the risk of being clamped if I start working on it in front of my property (in fact it has been clamped last week - someone probably called the DVLA) - basically I need to rent a private parking space for a week or so (probably more because I'm very meticolous/methodical and slow) and do it myself (hoping isn't going to rain much).
I've found out about stashbee - a sort of Airbnb for vehicles - basically you pay for private parking space in front of private houses where the owner don't need their parking space (very useful near airports before your holiday for example) but then the system doesn't allow campervan/big vans.

A garage specalized in welding (very good reviews) is checking my van right now...(hard to find) - they'll call me and let me know (a quote).

If that doesn't work - here's a wacky idea:
I'll book several garages all my way from Manchester to Glasgow - I can drive a sorn vehible if I have an appointment for an MOT - that way I get the van some useful mileage too as it seems it runs better and better and with less smoke after being static for so long.

quoted 1200 just for the welding - MOT is a chimera for this van....
It's a difficult decision but maybe it's time to scrap it (300 offered).

Luton ... don't they have a chassis cab layout, with metal that is sort of 4mm thick ...has to be really bad for that to rot through!

Sorry, only one Luton within 25 miles of centre of london - £2450 with no MOT ..then it jumps to 10,000 for the next one

As regards searching ebay ..really hard to understand, as late ...things disappear then come back in the searches ...tries to steer you to more expensive items ..even though you ordered low to high. things can be there on minute gone the next . even though they haven't gone.

the chassis overall is structurally sound - the worst bit (first pic) is near the front wheel. Some garages told me both areas/panels around the wheels need to be sorted...another was happy to only put some welding "patches" in the front wheels area. Some would do this in half a day some 1 whole day and another 2 days job.
I suspect, once the vehicle fails the MOT is more difficult to get it.

looks too far gone to justify the work in converting to camper - that chassis is not structurally sound

the job you are after is a quick patch job that will give it a couple of years at most ... there is far too much going on rust wise .. i would not bother .

By the chassis being structurally sound I mean the beams and simliar - I might be wrong but the stuff around the wheel is mostly holding itself (for what is left) and acting as a shield - if one removes all that you get a sort of "tractor" design (no protection around the wheels) but still the van isn't going to break dangerously in the middle of the road. Maybe there's a safety issue related to the security belt which has to anchor to that badly affected area.
Then, I take your piece of advice (you certainly know better than myself).

its long past its best and not a good example to convert and spend time on ... that's if you were planning on keeping it

I agree with most of your points except for one: I believe old rusty vans like these make perfect campervan projects - think about, this van has been used professionally moving heavy furnitures all over the UK for a more than a decade and being looked after by professional mechanics as I don't think a professional driver or removal staff team has got the time to repair it and put it back into motion quickly and efficiently as a professional mechanic (and losing money and time as a result of staying away from their business for repair).
Then, less load, less miles, less urgency (you just use it for leasure) - perfect for a retiring "tired" van.
About emissions - an old van like this one used as a campervan isn't going to pollute much as these are driven once/twice per week.

Then, I enjoy(ed) the challenge and it was a bit of a hobby - like when repairing old vintage saxes (which I do)...others would think it's impossible but then it's very rewarding when you put it together and make them useful again (and that vintage sound isn't to be found anymore).

If I could park it in front of my property I wouldn't hesitate to keep it and try to repair it - but, I've been targeted...don't want to get clamped.

What psrt looks too far gone??
Its a chassis cab and none of the chassis looks rotted , just inner sill /step/wheel arch areas corroded
