Mk7 exhaust camshaft endfloat?

Postby Chilla » Mon Aug 04, 2025 8:45 pm

Hi ya'll
2.4 rwd new head. Was going to use old camshafts. Inlet camshaft fine and moves freely when torqued down. Exhaust cam doesn't run as freely as inlet. Just slighty more resistance and some end float on the exhaust camshaft whereas there is non on the inlet camshaft.
As I'm this far in is it worth buying a new exhaust camshaft. Wondering what acceptable wear limits are?
Cheers

Mk7 & Mk6 cam carrier and rocker ladders are similar, but still different..Mk6 uses rocker shafts....Mk7 doesn't.

Yes Mark it did. Also noting some slight scoring on number 1 lobe. Wondering whether this could be down to previous valve damege

Yeah works for me too. Thanks good info.
To confirm this is a 2.4 JXFA.
Any thoughts on that endfloat? Probably 0.5mm. is that normal?

Mark that's great information thanks.
As I understand things at this point the 2.2 and 2.4 share the same exhaust camshafts so would expect those values to be the same.
If anyone knows any different please give us a shout.
Off to find my feelers gauge see where it's at....

I think the 2.2 has a vacuum pump hanging off one end of the cylinder head, driven by A camshaft .. that's one difference.

Ah ok. That would make sense. I noticed the slot on pictures but thought they might be general photos.
This company advertise to the camshaft as being for 2.2 and 2.4 ?

There are variations of part numbers for the 2.4 camshafts depending on year model too..:

2.4 "Exhaust Camshaft"...early (17/4/2006 to 15/1/2007) Pn: 1372744. Later 2.4 "Exhaust Camshaft" (15/1/2007 onwards).. Pn: 1545166.

2.4 "Inlet Camshaft"...early (17/4/2006 to 1/4/2010) Pn: 1688419. Later 2.4 "Inlet Camshaft" (1/4/2010 onwards).. Pn: 1704531.

2.2 Euro-4 Exhaust Camshaft" never changed from 17/4 2006 until end of production on 26/9/2011 Pn: 1372430.

2.2 "Euro-4 Inlet Camshaft" also never changed from 17/4/2006 until end of production on 26/9/2011 Pn: 1688422.

Euro-4 FWD 2.2 & RWD 2.4 camshafts are "NOT" the same. The Euro-4 FWD inlet camshaft drives the fuel pump and the FWD exhaust camshaft drives the vacuum pump. The 2.4 RWD camshafts drive nothing externally.

Thanks Mr Knobrot great information and puts a lot of the jigsaw together.
I liberated another camshaft off a early 07 scrapper this afternoon just to check endfloat. It was similar to my original but felt tighter to turn when clamped down so the original is going back on as it's within the specs listed above.
