So how do you shut a diff up?

Postby DaiTheVan » Fri Nov 04, 2005 9:52 pm

When I bought Gloria she had a shocking diff - a real howl above about 55 mph, so I got another one off a guy down the road, same 4.56 ratio for £30 so can't really complain, but it still sodding whines more than I want - ok round here, but annoying on a long run. I've read various things about what to do with them, like put Molyslip (is that what it says on the bottle?) in it etc - what do we really think please? Or does anyone have one for sale that really doesn't make that damn noise?

cheers Dai

old bodges for selling : - tights, nana skins or saw dust  failing that winding the radio up is cheap 8) , have you thought about having one reconditioned, try finding a friendly plant fitter / agricultural engineer, rather than gearbox specialist / garage. most parts should be available from ford. also why not try having the halfshafts out and doing the wheel bearings? they are only roller bearings after all, and you may find this is where most of the noise comes from. hope this helps
