Transit engine issue- pistons or a new engine?!?

Postby JaneandTarvan » Fri Aug 08, 2025 7:34 pm

Hi, my Ford Transit (Mk6 bus 2011) suddenly started making a noise like a motorbike and a van combined under 35mph. (About a month ago it temporarily felt like it lost power at a low speed under 30mph but then immediately righted itself). The garage suspects it might be a piston issue and is suggesting a new engine might be cheaper. Has anyone else had a similar issue? What were the costs like for repairs? Out of gear it feels a bit better at a stop but if I leave it in gear with the clutch pressed it's sort of knocking and shaking. Putting it back in gear and then starting to move it feels like it might cut out until my foot is off the clutch. Over 35 mph it seems ok. Oh yeah and am alone in Austria and my German is dreadful so any help much appreciated!!!

2011 is Euro-4 Mk7, not Mk6....which engine..?? 2.2 or 2.4..?? FWD or RWD..?? Diagnosing engine issues over the internet is near impossible without adequate information.

When were the learns last done..?? When was the fuel filter last replaced..??

I asked about price for a change of piston or engine. I don't know what learns are. Fuel filter was done in October when I serviced my van. 2.2 fwd.

Since you don't know about the learns, we can assume they've never been done...they're a service function but very few people actually do them as part of a service...even more people don't even know about them. The engines themselves are reasonably robust if looked after well. You'll need to get a proper diagnosis...

A major repair/overhaul of an otherwise healthy engine is costly and pointless.

He hasn't been back since the day he joined the forum, Sat 9th...so I suspect he won't be back. So many people ask questions and never return.
