transit custom 2.2 fume, smoke issue

Postby Steve192 » Tue Sep 23, 2025 8:14 pm

Hello guys,

I have a 2015 custom 2.2. I’m having an issue I’ve been chasing for a while now. The van smells really fumey in the cab and around the vehicle when running. I’ve checked the exhaust joints and they’ve all be re sealed with exhaust paste and extra sleeve brackets, I’ve extended the exhaust to put the back of the van now so it’s not stopping halfway.

There’s also a white smoke that comes out of the exhaust. It doesn’t do it from cold but only when you’ve drove the van for a little while then park up and go to leave again, that’s when it happens.

I’m thinking injector leaking off and filling a bore up after I’ve drove so when I stop and start it up again about an hour later it’s getting too much fuel in one of the chambers.

I’ve done a leak off test, I’ve attached a video. Everything looks fine, live data is showing a slight drop on one of the injectors. How do I go about finding an intermittent faulty injector fault? I have a recon injector in my garage to try but unsure how to determine which is at fault as leak off test showed nothing.

I’ve done the following to solve this with no luck.

Dpf egr delete (properly done) torneo rear exiting exhaust.
New injector copper seals
New fuel filter
New maf sensor
Full service

Not sure if the injector is leaking abit on sh*t down. How can I test this?

Cheers for any help

sorry i know very little about cylinder balance, which is why i left the question to be answered by someone else .... what i can help you with you're not showing. .

i want to see what the EGR is doing at tick over .. and moderate acceleration and hard acceleration, The EGR is number one problem causer for these engines, so is something that should be looked at first. - Note _Shown as percentage open or closed.

Anyway -

White smoke in summer conditions, or plus 12c ambient outside conditions is or could POSSIBLY be Head Gasket problems or EGR cooler leaking... NEITHER will show on the code reader. but could make engine perform erratically, if head gasket blow is into a cylinder.

Monitor your coolant level over the next few days ..
Then, if vanishing ... come back for more info on what to check and how to check for coolant issues.
Note: if you have the full antifreeze ration mix right ... the smell will be a sweet smell if its coolant. as antifreeze smells sweet when turned into steam.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I had a slight hesitation and an egr code when I bought the van, I replaced this with a hella unit but the problem was 100 times worse! I then fitted a peirburg unit a week later and the problem was much better than the hella but still there occasionally. I ran the van with the egr unplugged for a couple of weeks and the hesitation went away.

I’ve since had the egr and dpf deleted and the hesitation has completely gone now. So I can rule out an egr issue but I’m not sure if the cooler has cracked/leaking. As I’ve had the egr deleted from the van could I bypass the cooler by connecting the 2 coolant pipes together? This could help rule that out, although I’m not losing any coolant at all. Sits perfectly between the min and max lines all the time.

I’ve owned the van for a few months not so fairly new to this one but the previous mot history has had advisories for high emissions on 2 mots some 20k miles ago. So it’s been an ongoing issue which I was aware about.

There is the occasional white smoke issue from hot start but without fail a small rev up to 2000rpm on a standstill will put a small black puff of smoke out of the exhaust, has always done this from when I bought and even after dpf egr delete and remap it’s there which is leading me to over fuelling issue with an injector or multiple injectors.

Really odd one and hard to determine what’s the cause at the minute but the van is really smelly sometimes which is annoying.

Cheers for your input, really appreciate it.

OK TRY the EGR cooler bypass

Wondering if vaporiser is still connected ..and could be dripping ... diesel going into the exhaust from this, would it it or could it just vaporise it and cause --- maybe white smoke... theory is .. no DPF ... so no catchment area to start a burn, so just comes out as clouds of heated diesel.

A job i had in the past was working in a mine ,.... we would often use air powered hoists, sometimes they would stick and seize up .. the cure was to pour diesel into the air supply hose (BTW i wasn't happy seeing this done, as i thought it may cause an explosion) anyway huge clouds of white vapour flowed out of the hoists exhaust.

Do you by any chance know which hoses need joining to bypass the cooler?

I’ve done a search but the diagrams I’m finding are not exactly clear
