Newbie question

Postby Delapjr » Thu Feb 26, 2026 12:16 am

Hi Everyone, has anyone changed a mk1 front axle to a mk2 with disc brakes? I'm told its easy as, just a few bolts and connecting the brakes up - is there any hidden problems? Also did the early mk3 have a rigid front axle that could also go on a mk1?

Many thanks

Well there could be a Proportioning and Braking Balance problem .. that you'll only find out by doing it Or when the MOT comes up.
Or testing on the road eg.. brakes lock up on one axle.

May be nothing, it may be perfect.. i don't know

There may be a proportional brake valve balance thingy on models with disc brakes.

You'll find out Have a look through all the diagrams on this site to see if a device is there or not, compare disc and drum systems on mk 2 and mk3... with .. 4 drums , 2 drum 2 discs, look for difference .. devices/ restrictors/ valves fitted etc.

Can’t remember if all mk 1 & 2 had a L A V valve the type bolted to body and a rod down to the axle you can adjust it
There may be a difference in the size of the master cylinder also different bore size of the rear cylinders
For mot it shouldn’t be a problem providing the balance and the minimum required efficiency is met it should pass
