Transit mk8 2.2 starter issue

Postby Transitedd » Tue Jun 02, 2026 11:05 pm

Having a reccuring problem with my starter motor, I'm on the fourth starter motor this year.

Transit mk8 2.2 FWD 2014

Last 2 starter motors have been Lucas, so not cheap quality.

I've checked the flywheel ring gear and there isn't obvious wear or broken teeth, all looks pretty uniform.

Before cranking the engine I have to wait for all the dash lights turn off, only after they've turned off can I crank the engine.
If I try and turn over before the lights go off, the starter motor struggles to turn the van over.
When the starter motor is beginning to die, it starts to hesitant more and more with a little bit of grinding.

I've clean a lot of the terminals from the battery to the starter,
New battery
Voltage drop test:
11.03v cranking
0.237v positive resistance (battery to starter)
0.116v earth resistance (battery to starter)

Cold starts are definitely better than hot starts
I've been told it could be the ignition switch, however moving the key around doesn't make any difference, albut I do carry a lot of keys
I've also tried hooking up the battery earth to the starter earth, the results are negligible, sometimes it seems to help, others it doesn't.
When starting the headlights either flicker or completely turn off

I'm really at a loss as I use this van daily for work and I'm having to carry a spare starter for the off chance it doesn't start.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be or what to check?

As mentioned the voltage drop test came back okay.

could it be a leaky injector.. or head gasket .. water or fuel in the cylinders.

you've had four starters
where they new or used .. these transit do high mileages and any used motor will be .. well on its way to being buggered

you need to do a cranking amps test .. with clip on ammeter

other things --- timing chain has jumped

all the best.mark

Mk8 first appeared in 2014, but engine would be the same anyway :)
