Transit Courier 1.5tdci Priming issue

Postby JoeNVS » Sat Sep 12, 2026 7:45 pm

Hi guys, I have a 2016 courier with the 1.5 XWCB engine. I purchased it with a non start issue which turned out to be the high pressure fuel pump. Vehicle ran before I changed it but was intermittent as the pump was damaged internally so would drop pressure randomly killing the engine, I’ve put on a new fuel pump but I can’t for the life of me get it to prime up and start. I’ve put a manual primer bulb in between the tank and the fuel filter and can get fuel to come out of the high pressure fuel pump when manually priming it but I can’t get the pump to actually build pressure. I’ve checked and double checked the timing many times and that fine. The fuel lines/injectors/tank has all been cleaned out due to swarf from the pump.

Is there something I’ve missed or would you say the new pump is also dead? It wasn’t brand new it was off eBay as there a small fortune to buy new, or is there a certain way to prime these engines? As I’m aware it doesn’t have the electric pump in the tank it just uses the hpfp to pull the fuel from the tank.

Cheers.

I've heard that with the TDCI engine the injectors turn off, if you let the pressure fall by trying to bleed it
and no injectors mean no fuel getting to them.. and no priming.
Have a go with engine starter spray .. see if it gets it running long enough to prime the injectors without cracking anything open.

We don't know anything about the courier here .. don't think ive seen one question asked in at least 2 years about one

So we don't know if it has an in tank pump etc.. otherwise i would be giving you advice about that .

It does have an in tank pump ..

Check this is operating .. turn ignition on, you should here it run for a few seconds

Note: if been laid up for a while, pumps can stick .. wallop fuel tank with a rubber mallet is the temporary cure
