Low fuel warning system

Postby sspeeedy » Sun Nov 20, 2005 9:50 pm

As ive not had my van veryu long i wanted to no how many miles to the tank id get from it. A friend of mine works at the local foed garage and told me how the low fuel system works on the new shape transits. I had done 350 miles when the fuel light came on most of which was done on the motorway doing 80 to 90. Then after 45 miles the van felt like i was touching the brakes a little. This is what the ecu does to tell you that you have 4 litres left in the tank. I was then able to do another 20 miles which got me home. When there is about 1 litres left the ucu will shut the engine down so that it doesnt run dry and have to be bled.

What a superb idea it is and why dont other manufacturers do this (or do they).

Thats about right. :D

At 2% remaining the PCM switches to a low fuel level stratergy with will give the impression of running out of fuel. The pcm sends a signal to the fuel pump module to ramp the fuel up and down to give a buck and jerk feeling.

This is employed on all the ford diesel vehicles in current production.

After the PCM has sent the "request for engine stop" @ around 1% the engine can be restarted and run dry as many have found
