NEW BLOODY TRANSITS

Postby eddie anderson » Tue Nov 22, 2005 7:22 pm

I have a fault on my 51 plate transit which causes it to cut out and die, give it ten mins it will burst into life then cut out again ten mins later only not to start untill it is at the garage and they tell me there is nowt wrong with it, its doing my nut in. I have a friend with a 54 plate which was doing the same but Ford fixed that with a new unit, I am at my wits end, it has cost me a grand already. Please help

You might be able to say that Val, but many, many others wont! Between the dodgy gearboxes, microchips that cost 100s, suspension being ripped off on kerbs and unexplained rot I doubt as many Mk4s or whatever will make it to classics. If, in a few years time the owner of a 6 year old van is faced with a bill for say £1000 for a selection of any of the above, the van is more likely to be scrapped than repaired. This happed with the Mk2 in the 80s. I am sure more perfectly repairable vans were sent to the scrappie than should have been, just because the owners couldn't be bothered and wanted a newer van. Even I have to admit the members of this board are the exception rather than the rule, we are prepared to do what it takes, or know somebody who can!

Hi Fred

It was something I was pondering on. As the values depreciate, at a commercial decision, it becomes no longer sensible to repair but then if you factor in that there is no more depreciation and possibly appreciation and the earlier models are user workable the commercial decision to keep them becomes justified. Then there is the bond between the driver and his/her machine that no monetary value can decipher.

An analogy would seem to be that if a family labrador needed a vet bill of 200 quid and a new pup could be had for 150 why would you fix the old one?

Cheers Cad

Getting a bit off topic here, BUT your analogy is brilliant. I was as upset loosing a van in an accident as I was to loose a dog. However on a purley business note I have never understood why people think it's more cost effective to to spend £3000 on another used van rather than £300 on welding or other work for the MOT. We all have to have road tax, it's the same for any transit, and as for insurance it's cheaper to insure and old van than a brand new one cos at a total loss the insurance company has a smaller payout.

I would suggest getting a 'diagnostic' test run on it and get the computer printout before shelling out on any parts, the ECU will be logging the fault if its anything major electrical.

If its not electrical then the options come down to fuel related problems.

i would agree you have to get the printout first to see if it will guide you in the right direction, or you'll end up changing good parts at a considerable cost only to eliminate them as a problem, effective method but time consuming and expensive, from what you have said it sounds like something doesn't like getting warm, or you have something like a fuel starvation problem, i don't know with the newer transits but i have heard of some vehicles having a problem because the tank breather gets blocked and the pump then fails to suck fuel from the tank causing it to cut out, leaving it 10 minutes and the pressure drops enough to allow the pump to function correctly
