I'm not famlilair with your Tranny m8, so bear with me.
If it's the bosch pump, your not going to turn it by hand more than about 1" in each direction without a spanner/socket.
As you rotate the pump you should feel 4 real tight spots, thates when the important bits of the pressure generation are happening.
If you are unsure as to the pumps internal condition, remove the banjo bolt from the return pipe...thats the plstic pipe at the top of the pump at the back, that banjo screws into a restrictor (again it's a 17mm spanner job) once thats out you'll see a small hole on one side and a filter on the other.
Find a clean area and tap the filter side of the restrictor on the clean bit, if you get lots of metal and bits of black plastic, the pump is less than perfect interally...

. it is OK to have some v.small bits.
30k isn't much for the belt, if it's failed i'd suspect overtightening or oil/water contamination at some point.
Will you be sticking it back together with the latest auto tensioner?
Don't worry about the smoke just yet, it sounds like the belt had jumped a few teeth before it snapped giving retarded fuel timing.
The push rods will have saved most of the damage, but be sure to check the rocker arms as they can distort. Shouldn't be any need to have the head off though
